Voices of EDCi: Celebrating Women’s History Month - Tasha's Journey

Author:

March is Women’s History Month, and we’re excited to shine a spotlight on some of the incredible women who not only drive the success of our company but also enrich our communities. These inspiring ladies break barriers and shape the future of EDCi with their diverse talents, perspectives, and leadership. Their dedication to innovation and resilience inspires us daily– driving us forward and contributing to our shared success.

Today, we are shining a spotlight on Tasha, an Experience Engineer at EDCi. Read along with us as she shares her advice, experiences, and so much more.

Tasha’s Journey

I feel so lucky to work on a team with so many strong, smart women, and they have inspired me greatly. Darla, Liz, Missy, and Patti are all women I work with daily and who have taught me so much in my year here.I have never met a group of women quite like this team—everyone is incredibly knowledgeable, goes the extra mile every day, and is kind and compassionate. I have never been made to feel out of place or dumb for asking questions, and I know that as a team, we will always get the job done. It really is so inspiring and refreshing, especially in a male-dominated field.

One of the biggest challenges I faced in my career before joining EDCi was the lack of seriousness given to women. There’s a stereotype that women are overly emotional and struggle with complex tasks, which is simply not true. Women, especially black women, are the most educated demographic in America. This wouldn’t be the case if women were more emotional or less intelligent than men. I believe that every woman should know how to use her voice and stand up against stereotypes. No one should be afraid to ask for what they need at work, whether it’s assistance with daily tasks or fair wages. Gender inequality is a real issue; even if you haven’t personally experienced it, it is important to equip yourself with the tools to ensure that you never have to. Stay confident in who you are and your skills, and don’t be afraid to seek mentorship and guidance from other strong women along the way.

Empowering Women Through Mentorship and Confidence in Tech

Mentorship is the best way to support and empower women in the workplace. Forming relationships with other women can help navigate difficult situations, encourage career development, and assist with relationship building professionally.

Don’t be afraid to apply for jobs you think you’re not qualified for. I spent 10 years in social work before transitioning to technology and I applied to over 100 jobs because the tech market is very competitive. When I first started applying, I only applied for jobs I thought were appropriate, but my female mentor told me at my coding boot camp to apply for jobs even if I didn’t think I was qualified. Companies can determine if you are a good fit or have the skills needed.

We are often our hardest critics and sell ourselves short-STOP DOING THIS. Men are taught to be bold and confident at a young age, and women are usually taught to shrink themselves in more than one way. Everyone should be confident in who they are- take up space, apply for those jobs and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself.

I love the challenge that technology brings. It’s also pretty cool to be able to say I’m part of the very small number of women who make up the tech field – only 35 percent. It’s pretty amazing to be able to be a part of this number, and it’s important for me to do my best to pave the way for other women to break into the field. My hard work and drive show others that women can get the work done effectively, and hopefully, I can be a small example of the capabilities of women who are given the chance to excel.

Who Inspires You?

My friends always are and always have been my biggest inspiration. The first image is with my friend Elisa- we do a ton of races together and crossfit competitions! We ran the NYC marathon together in 2023 and we are running the Desert News marathon in Utah together in July!  The second image is with my friends Lori and Whitney who are both in law enforcement to different degrees and are seriously some of the toughest women I know! Lori was even a first responder in NYC on 9/11! Really some of the most fearless women to exist!
